Work during my time with Tiger Studio
I was lucky enough to be brought on as an intern to Tiger Studio the summer after my Junior Year at Kendall. I continued through my senior year and the two years after graduation learning a ton from my coworkers. We worked with clients from contract office furniture manufacturers, to police lighting manufacturers, in all phases of projects. Sometimes we were brought in for the beginning research only, sometimes just for form development, and occasionally to button up loose ends for projects getting ready for production.
Herman Miller is a local contract furniture manufacturer known for some of their iconic Eames designs. For this project, Herman Miller was looking to optimize the usage of their Beam furniture system. We started by gathering user insights by people using the product and distilling that into a number of product needs. In this case, our final deliverable was a foam core mock up with renderings of the vision for the accessories. I was ID lead on this project.
Herman Miller has a really incredible team of engineers that spring into motion to help adapt their products to specific client needs. I co-developed a program to walk the engineering team through the process we use to think through design problems, and helped run a two day workshop to share the methods.
Tiger Studio was also passionate about teaching design to students across the globe. The studio paired with Grand Valley to join a group of students in Esteli, Nicaragua to teach problem solving and the design process. I went twice, once in 2012, and again in 2013.
Knape and Vogt is a Grand Rapids hardware manufacturer. IU was lucky enough to be able to work on a few projects with them. In this case, the need was an modern and simple fascia that worked with existing door hardware for a solution that worked in residential and commercial spaces.
